Arctic Char Fishing in the Arctic Wilderness

Arctic Char Fishing in the Arctic Wilderness

Some fishing lakes have never seen a fly.

Deep within the Finnmark plateau and in the border mountains towards Finland lie lakes that aren't on any map. No trails lead there. No cabins. No other fishermen.

We take you there – and for a few days, the lake is yours.

The Experience

Where No One Else Goes

There are thousands of mountain lakes in Northern Norway. Most are accessible – with enough time, fitness, and willingness to carry a pack for days.

But some lakes lie so far in that even the most determined hikers never reach them. The terrain is too demanding. The distances too great.

That's where we go.

Here we set up camp by the water's edge. And here you get something rare: days of fishing in complete silence, without another person in sight.

Two Ways to Get There

Choose What Suits You

We offer two options to reach the same hidden lakes. Both give you access to fishing waters where arctic char live undisturbed, year after year.

Helicopter

For those who want the shortest way in.

The helicopter takes you directly to the water's edge. No walking, no carrying. You land, set up camp, and fish.

Suited for:

  • Those who want to maximize time at the lake
  • Groups where some have physical limitations
  • Those who want the most spectacular arrival

Helicopter is weather-dependent and must be booked well in advance. The price reflects this.

What most guests choose

ATV + Hiking

For those who want a real wilderness experience – at half the price.

We transport all your gear with our 6x6 ATV. You walk the final kilometers to the lake yourself – light, without a pack.

When you arrive, camp is ready. Tent, equipment, everything you need. You've just warmed up and are ready to fish.

Suited for:

  • Those who like to use their body but don't want to carry heavy loads
  • Those who appreciate walking into the landscape, not just landing in it
  • Those who want the same lakes, same fishing – but smarter price

The walk in becomes part of the experience. You see the terrain change. You feel the silence settle. When you finally see the lake open up before you, you've earned it.

“

We considered helicopter but chose to walk in. Best decision. That hour hiking through the plateau – without a pack, just us and the landscape – was an experience in itself. And the fishing was just as good.

The Arctic Char

A Fish That Requires Patience

Arctic char isn't like trout. It doesn't follow rules. Some days it's active for hours, other days it rests on the bottom and ignores everything you cast.

But when the char finally wakes – when the surface breaks with fish after fish – then you understand why people come back to these lakes.

What can you expect?

Arctic char of 1-3 kg are common in our lakes. Larger fish exist. But we don't promise record catches. What we offer is access to lakes where fish live undisturbed – and it shows.

Who This Is For

Not for Everyone

This trip suits you if you appreciate silence. If you have time to wait for the fish. If you prefer an experience you'll remember over one you can brag about.

You don't need to be in top shape – especially not with helicopter. But even the ATV option only requires moderate hiking without a heavy pack.

Age is no limitation. We've had guests from 30 to 75 years old. Physical challenges can often be accommodated – let us know and we'll figure out what's possible.

Practical Information

Tailored to You

Every trip is different. Duration, group size, which lakes, transport – everything is adapted to your wishes.

Typical setup:

  • 2-7 days at the lake
  • Camp with tent and necessary equipment
  • You bring sleeping bag, pad, food, and fishing gear
  • We bring everything else

We discuss:

  • Which transport solution suits you
  • Which period gives the best conditions
  • What you can expect from fishing at that time
  • Any adaptations for your group

Sami reindeer herder and lead guide

Growing up as a reindeer herder, hunting and fishing have been part of my life since I was a child — not a hobby, but a way of living. I grew up in Kautokeino, and the plateau has always been my map. Few know the Finnmark plateau the way a reindeer herder does: the seasons, the terrain, the wildlife, the waters. That is the knowledge I bring to every trip with my guests.

We rely on official data and regulators when planning trips. These sources offer independent context on season, rules and ecology.

Common Questions

What's the difference between the two options?

Same lakes, same fishing, same camp experience. The difference is how you get there – and the price. The ATV option costs about half of helicopter.

How far do you walk with the ATV option?

It varies by which lake we choose – from a short 30-40 minute walk to longer hikes. You walk without a pack, so it's manageable for most.

What if the weather turns bad?

Arctic weather is unpredictable. For helicopter, it may mean delays. ATV is more flexible. In both cases, we adapt – it's part of being this far out.

Can I come alone?

Yes. Many do. Prices are per trip, so it pays to bring others – but some prefer the solitude alone.

Do I need a lot of experience?

No. But you should enjoy fishing, and you should enjoy peace and quiet.

Ready for lakes no one else fishes?
