Trout Fishing in Finnmark with Local Guide
Finnmark has Norway's largest wild trout. Most people never find them.
The Finnmark plateau hides thousands of fishing lakes. A select few hold large trout weighing 2-4 kilos – but they're not along the road, and they're not on the map.
We've fished these waters for three generations. Now we'll take you there.
Large trout require the right water
Finnmark has over 20,000 fishing lakes. The vast majority contain pike and whitefish. These are the lakes most tourists end up fishing – week after week.
But scattered across the plateau are isolated lakes with completely different conditions: cold, deep water with perfect nutrient access. This is where trout grow large.
These lakes are off the road. You need local knowledge, the right transport, and someone who knows exactly where the fish are – this week, not last year.
That's where we come in.

Most beat their personal best
We can't promise you'll catch fish – no one can. But this is what we see season after season:
Typical catches:
- Trout: 1-3 kg is common, fish over 4 kg caught every season
- Arctic char: Often 1-2 kg, sometimes larger
- Grayling: Surprisingly large in certain rivers
What makes the difference?
We choose the fishing spot each morning based on weather conditions, water temperature, and what's been working the past few days. This means you're not stuck in the same spot all week – you fish where the fish actually are.
“I've been fly fishing for 20 years and never caught a trout over 2 kilos. On day two in Finnmark, I caught two over 3 kilos. The lake was so remote we had to drive the six-wheeler for 40 minutes to get there.

From comfortable base to wilderness – and back
You stay at Norvilt Lodge in Kautokeino. No tents, no mosquitoes in your sleeping bag, no wet clothes that never dry.
Accommodation:
- Two bedrooms, four beds
- Fully equipped kitchen
- Shower, toilet, washing machine
- Fiber internet and TV
- Air conditioning (yes, it gets warm in Finnmark in summer)
Each day:
You wake up well-rested. We plan the day's fishing over coffee – where are we going, what are the conditions, which technique works best. Then we head out.

Where no one else goes
Our CanAm 6x6 six-wheeler takes us places cars can't go. This means:
- Fishing lakes without other people
- River stretches far from parking lots
- Ability to move if fishing is slow in one spot
You don't have to hike for hours with a heavy pack. We drive you in, you fish, we drive you out. Simple.
Your car is also available if you want to explore on your own (you cover fuel).
Both fly fishers and spin fishers
We adapt to your equipment and experience:
Fly fishing:
Finnmark's rivers and lakes offer excellent conditions for dry fly and nymph fishing. We know the spots where trout hold within casting distance of the bank – no boat needed.
Spin fishing:
Deeper water and larger fish often require different gear. We take you to places where lures come into their own.
Beginner?
We've taken guests who've never held a fly rod before. You learn as you go.
Physical limitations?
The six-wheeler means you don't need to be in peak physical condition. Let us know when booking, and we'll adapt.

Ole Nils Ailo Siri
Sami reindeer herder and lead guide
Growing up as a reindeer herder, hunting and fishing have been part of my life since I was a child — not a hobby, but a way of living. I grew up in Kautokeino, and the plateau has always been my map. Few know the Finnmark plateau the way a reindeer herder does: the seasons, the terrain, the wildlife, the waters. That is the knowledge I bring to every trip with my guests.

Is this comparable to the Kola Peninsula?
Some of our guests have fished on Kola. They say Finnmark offers a different kind of experience – wilder, more untouched, and without the Russian logistics. The fish aren't as large as Kola's salmon, but the trout and char here are world-class.
What if the weather is bad?
Finnmark is Finnmark. We fish in most conditions, but we also have alternative plans. Some of the best fishing days come right after rain.
Can I come alone?
Yes. Many of our guests come alone and appreciate having a guide to talk fishing with.
